Check out all the venues and results for 2024 Olympic Games women’s soccer tournament, including the knockout bracket.

What was the women’s Olympic Games soccer format?

The 12 teams were drawn into three groups of four nations.

The group winners, runners-up and the two best third-placed countries advanced to the knockout rounds.

It was then a straight knockout tournament, with extra time and penalties if necessary. There were quarterfinals, semifinals, a bronze medal match and a gold/silver medal match.

The tournament was held in France but largely outside of Paris. As well as in the capital, matches were also played in Bordeaux, Décines-Charpieu (Lyon), Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Étienne.

Why was the women’s competition for senior players?

The men’s game has many top-level competitions, many of which take place in the same year as the Olympics. For instance, in 2024, both the European Championship and the Copa América were held just before the Olympic Games.

The Olympics are not included as part of the FIFA international match calendar for men, which means countries cannot call up any players they wish. Selections are made based upon discussions with clubs about a player’s release, which makes it impossible for the Olympics to be considered a senior tournament in the men’s game.

This is very different to the women’s competition, which included full senior squads and didn’t take place in the same year as other tournaments.

So it’s for this reason that the men’s competition at the Olympics was primarily made up of under-23 players, though each country was able to include up to three players who were aged over 23.
